Dr. Jonathan Wareham

Optometrist
Dr. Wareham is now happily applying a neuro-scientific approach to the practice of optometry by providing Vision Therapy for patients with developmental vision problems or who require vision rehabilitation following brain injury. He loves a challenge and celebrates in the success of his patients. Dr. Wareham practices are located in the Ottawa and Belleville area.
About Me
Let me take a moment and introduce myself. My name is Dr. Jon Wareham. I am an optometrist providing Vision Therapy services. I have increasingly practiced Vision Therapy since 2004. Now Vision Therapy is all that I do. I love Vision Therapy. It is a privilege to help a patient improve visual skills that in turn help them to be happier and more productive. When visual coordination is poor, many aspects of life are affected, reading ability, headaches, double vision, blurred vision, clumsiness, dizziness and balance issues: leading to frustration and feelings of inadequacy. With improved visual coordination these issues melt away and a sense of accomplishment and freedom are restored. I believe in neuroplasticity and that a person is never too old to learn or relearn how to use their visual system. At Pupils Vision Therapy, we want to help your patients who would benefit from Vision Therapy. Patients who thrive with Vision Therapy include: 1) Vision Related Learning Problems (VRLP): 70% of children on an IEP have VRLP*. These often include convergence difficulties and other binocular vision issues, accommodative insufficiency or Infacility as well as ocular motor dysfunction. Vision Therapy is the gold standard treatment for these conditions*. 2) Post-Concussion: 60% of post-concussion patients have visual complications affecting recovery*. These often include convergence difficulties and other binocular vision issues, poor depth perception, accommodative insufficiency or Infacility, ocular motor dysfunction, visual motion sensitivity, visual midline shift and post traumatic vision syndrome. 3) Strabismus and Amblyopia: Vision Therapy principles teach the patient how to use the eyes together as a team. Vision Therapy is an alternative to surgery or can be used in conjunction with surgery to improve the odds of developing true binocular vision. The object of Vision Therapy is to train/retrain visual skills that were poorly developed or lost as a result of injury. In the process of Vision Therapy, we work on visual skills, such as but not limited to; convergence and divergence training, accommodation, ocular motility, eye teaming, depth perception, peripheral vision training, visual awareness, visual midline realignment, and spatial perception rehabilitation. The most successful training will incorporate weekly one-on-one sessions with a Vision Therapist working under the direction of a trained Optometrist in conjunction with exercises to be completed at home as reinforcement of skills learned in therapy. At Pupils Vision Therapy, we have knowledge and technology to diagnose and train the visual system. We use Visual Evoked Potentials to assess the degree of post traumatic vision syndrome as well as to assess how the brain is working with each eye in the case of strabismus and amblyopia. We have Vivid Vision which is a 3D virtual reality system designed to treat strabismus and amblyopia. The Readalyzer is an eye-tracking device to measure eye movements while reading. We use the VTS4 which is a computer-based orthoptic program on a large screen 3D TV designed to train depth perception for all patients including stabismic and amblyopic patients. We also use the Wayne Saccadic Fixator as well as various stereoscopes, lenses, prisms, filters and many other tools in our training program. We also successfully provide Vision Therapy via Skype or FaceTime for patients who are unable to attend weekly in-office sessions. I welcome the opportunity to discuss how Vision Therapy services can be of benefit. Thank You, Jonathan M. Wareham M.Sc. O.D. B.Sc. Neuroscience University of Lethbridge M.Sc.
