Calgary’s Dash of Doom - Confront that Sense of Impending Doom in the Most Fun Way Possible!

Christie Melhorn
If you are getting bored of your exercise routine, liven things up by participating in Calgary’s Dash of Doom on Saturday, October 29th at 5pm. The Dash of Doom is a family friendly event that is in support of Alberta’s Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS). You are encouraged to wear a costume and bring your furry family members along to temporarily haunt the Bow River pathways. group walking

What is it?

There are three different levels of the race that you can participate in. For kids 12 and under, there is a 1km race that begins at 4:45pm. For families participating recreationally, there is a 5km run/walk beginning at 5pm. For those who are feeling particularly alive (or should I say dead?), a 10km competitive run will also be taking place at 5pm along the same route.

Where is it?

The route loops along the running pathways from Eau Claire Market around to 14th street bridge. If you’re interested in participating, I recommend taking a practice walk or run through this stretch of the city to gain a sense of familiarity with it. The orange leaves scattered across the paths give it an energizing vibrancy and satisfying crunch as you make your way along.

Why bother?

Whether you are a walking or running participant, you will get a nice dose of exercise on this route. According to the Government of Victoria State, Australia, even just 30 minutes of walking a day can boost cardiovascular power, build muscle and increase bone strength (this is especially handy for those wanting to rock a skeleton costume!) [1]. On top of that, TIME Magazine explains that outdoor exercise is ideal because of a stress-reducing chemical called phytoncides that is produced by trees. So not only are the many trees that line the pathway beautifully eerie to look at as their bare branches become more exposed but they are healing on a chemical level!

calgary dash of doom The social element of The Dash of Doom also offers some great health benefits. According to the National Institute of Aging, social interaction is consistently proven to positively affect our health [2]. Lonely individuals tend to have higher blood pressure and a greater sense of morbidity. In contrast, socially-engaged and fulfilled individuals tend to have greater emotional bonds with others and are at lower risk of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. With this in mind, The Dash of Doom is more like an opportunity to dash to blooming health. Dressing up can also inspire you and unlock some of inner creative impulses that my be stifled in the daily grind of your busy routine.

How to Join
